Do you need a portable spot cleaner?

A portable carpet or upholstery cleaner can be handy, but it is different from a full-room carpet machine and an ordinary vacuum.

Match the machine to the mess

A spot cleaner is intended for localized wet cleaning of compatible upholstery, rugs and other surfaces. It is not a replacement for dry debris pickup or routine vacuuming. Check the fabric’s care label before wet cleaning, and follow the cleaner manufacturer’s instructions for allowable surfaces and solutions.

Pay attention to cleanup after cleanup

Tank capacity, hose length, attachments and storage footprint determine how practical a portable machine feels. After a cleaning session, you will also need to empty, rinse and dry components to avoid odors. Consider whether you have a convenient place to fill the clean-water tank and empty dirty water.

When a simpler tool is enough

A cloth, appropriately chosen cleaner or manual spot treatment may be all you need for rare and tiny spills. Compare a portable machine only if the kinds of messes and surfaces in your home justify the extra storage and maintenance. BISSELL Little Green is one widely discussed example, but verify its exact attachments and model before ordering.
